Elephant hawk moth and another giant horsefly?

This magnificent but slightly damaged moth was hiding in the thistles alongside the path to the east of Pony Wood.

The fat wasp looking thing was on the fence near the Cromwell Rd entrance to Fauna. Is it a lighter giant horsefly?

  1. Lovely Elephant Hawk Moth! And yes, as far as I know that’s another Dark Giant Horsefly – the yellow triangles down the back of the abdomen (not quite meeting the edge of the next segment) are diagnostic, apparently. These are clearer in your photo than in mine.
