Your First Day Volunteering

What to bring

We work in all weathers, sometimes in muddy conditions, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear. We have a supply of work gloves, but many people like to bring their own.

Tell us about any medical conditions

Please let the Volunteer Organiser know if you have a medical condition which might affect you while working (for example, a heart condition), or which could be triggered by contact with plants or insects (for example, an allergic reaction). This is treated confidentially, though the Organiser may share it with trained first aiders if appropriate. We have a defibrillator and first aid kit on site — talk to the Organiser if you have any concerns.

Watch out for ticks

The first aid box includes a simple tick-removing tool. Always ask a trained first aider to remove a tick for you. Be aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease — see the NHS guide to Lyme disease.

If something goes wrong

We keep a note of emergency contact names and numbers for every volunteer. There’s always a trained first aider on site, but in the first instance, speak to the Volunteer Organiser. Whistles are provided — use one to draw attention if you need help.

Working with tools

Many of our tools are ordinary garden and woodland tools, but they still need care — even a saw can give a nasty cut. If you’re not used to a tool, ask for advice before using it. Other tools are more mechanical, and you’ll need instruction from an experienced colleague before using them. Always ask if you’re unsure — we’ll never pressure you into a task you’re not comfortable with.

Cattle

Some of our fields are grazed by a herd of White Park cattle. They’re generally docile, but keep your distance — especially if a cow has a calf.

Hygiene

Please use the antiseptic hand gel provided, especially before eating or drinking — we’ll supply the refreshments!

Photographs

We often take photographs of volunteers at work. If you’d rather not be photographed, just let us know.

Young volunteers

Volunteers aged 14–18 need a parent or guardian to complete a simple consent form. Children under 14 must be accompanied and closely supervised by a responsible adult throughout.

Any concerns?

If you ever have any concerns about safety, please raise them with the Volunteer Organiser.
