Volunteering session Saturday 9th July

Here is Jonathan’s message

Greetings All,

There’ll be a volunteer session at Fairfield Orchard, Fauna and Flora this
Saturday morning, July 9th, starting at 10.00am and finishing at 1.00pm or
very much thereabouts.

If you can come along here are some of the activities you can look forward
to.

* Strimming the grass that overhangs the Fauna path.

* Strimming in the Orchard where we are returning land to grass.

* Cutting back and digging out bramble along the Fauna path.

* Cutting off and removing flowering heads of dock around the Flora Field
margin,
the Paddock and in Carr House Meadow.

* Weeding around new hedge saplings along the Pads footpath.

* Weeding around the new plugs in the Hay Meadow.

* Thinning out apples according to our expert advice.

Or in it’s shortened form: strim, strim, cut, cut, weed, weed and thin.

Best wishes,

Jonathan.

  1. Here’s what we did
On a wet and miserable morning 13 brave souls turned out for the Saturday volunteering session.
    • We removed the flowering heads of dock in the wildflower margin of Flora Field to prevent further seeding.
    • Similarly dock flowering heads were removed from the Paddock and Orchard.
    • Encroaching bramble was cut back and / or dug out of the grass margin alongside the Fauna path.
    • The hedge was cut back around the benches on the Fauna path.
    • The fruit trees were thinned of multiple fruits as recommended by Keith.
