The Lancashire Wildlife Trust Ponds Project

In 2020 we were invited by Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) to participate in a project to create or improve habitats for the endangered Great Crested Newt (GCN) across North Lancashire. Over the next two winters a team from LWT excavated or improved ponds in Flora Field, the Hay Meadow, Lower Sowerholme and West Field.

Hibernacula (underground chambers made from logs and turf where newts can spend the winter) were constructed. LWT staff monitor the ponds annually. Although, as yet there has been no sign of Great Crested Newt the project has had a positive impact on the habitats for other invertebrates and are ideal for dragonflies and damselflies.
