The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

Lucy Brook Restoration Project

Published: 22 July 2025

Updated 26 September 2025 following grant submission.

The project

The Fairfield Association is planning to create a wetland corridor alongside the existing course of Lucy Brook with extra ponds and channels linked to the brook, a series of small woody dams and the seeding and planting of wetland herbs and shrubs.

The map is illustrative. Click/tap a feature to bring up information about the feature. If you have difficulty viewing the map, please try the alternative map.

This new area would provide cover for small mammals and birds, encourage insects such as damselflies and dragonflies and provide a food source for predators such as tawny and barn owls.

Footpath unaffected

The public footpath will be unaffected and as the area develops, we expect the increase in wildlife to give added interest to walks along our paths.

Tell us your views

The work involved would cost between ยฃ30,000 and ยฃ35,000. A funding application to
Lancashire Environment Fund was submitted in September and we should find out whether
we have been successful before Christmas. If we are successful work by Lancashire Wildlife
Trust would start in the spring.

You can still express your views in the comments section below. You can just say “YES” or “NO” and add further thoughts if you wish.

Alternatively, you can email and let us know.

Now that the grant for the project has been confirmed, all our online discussions about the project will take place on the Lucy Brook Restoration Project Discussion Page.
